Field Activity J696MB

Identifier J696MB
Alternate names J-6-96-MB
Purpose Ground truth the area previously covered by side-scan sonar and seismic reflection profiling.
Description Chief Scientist: Roberto Anima. Geophysical data (sidescansonar, GPS, underwatertelevision, VanVeengrab) of field activity J-6-96-MB in Monterey Bay, California from 09/30/1996 to 10/16/1996
Location California
Comments physical data holdings Monterey Bay Marine Santuary Nearshore Studies--Rough seas and stormy weather kept the intended cruise of two weeks in port for all but five days. During the first three days of operations underwater video footage was collected in the vicinity of Ano Nuevo and Scotts Creek. The video shows a striking difference in outcrop types and textural variation in sediment type across the nearshore shelf area. Bad weather forced the last two days of operations to place two week after the initial startup time. Roberto Anima, Jim Tait, Peter Galanis, Marge Medrano, Intern student Betsy Cooper, and UCSC Graduate Students Curt Storlazzi, and Deirdre Scholar, and Undergraduate Yvonne Rodriguez report they, with the support from Mike Boyle and Gordon Smith (skipper), were able to collect excellent video coverage and sediment samples of six areas covered. The MBMS nearshore studies has compiled an emense data base of side scan sonar and seismic reflection records that has undergone preliminary mapping and interpretation. The purpose of this cruise was to ground truth the mapping and interpretation with underwater video and grab sampling. Aside from the unfortunate weather problems the days worked proved fruitful. More of the same information needs to be collected in the sites not occupied during this cruise. - R.Anima Staff information imported from InfoBank Roberto Anima (USGS Western Region) - Chief Scientist Jim Tait (USGS Western Region) - Scientist Pete Galanis (USGS Western Region) - Scientist Marjorie Medrano (USGS Western Region) - Scientist Betsy Cooper (USGS Western Region) - Intern student Curt Storlazzi (UCSC) - Graduate student Deirdre Scholar (UCSC) - Graduate student Yvonne Rodriquez (UCSC) - Student Mike Boyle (USGS Western Region) - Support Gordon Smith (USGS Western Region) - Ship Captain
