The cruise was split to reflect two different operations: use the ROV to collect samples from submarine canyons (part 1) and then to deploy cable for the sea floor observatory taking a few additional vibracore samples near the observatory (part 2). A brief port stop on 02 Nov (JD306) for personnel transfers.
Description
Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute,United States Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California. Chief Scientists: Charlie Paull, Mark Chaffey, MBARI. Sampling data (vibratingcore) of field activity W-4-06-MB in Central California continental margin between Pt.Sur and Pt. San Martin from 10/31/2006 to 11/07/2006
Location
Central California continental margin between Pt. Sur and Pt. San Martin
Summary
Refer to sample list W-4-06-MB_sampleslist_VC50-VC65.xls
Info derived
Continue a sampling program to look at sediment transport in smaller canyons south of Pt. Sur, e.g., Sur, Partington, Lucia, and Little Lucia Canyons. Obtain additional samples to evaluate the recent history of sediment transport through Monterey Canyon in the area of the Shepard Meander. This is a continuation of earlier collaborative work with MBARI scientists.
Comments
(1) Station IDs reflect the Tiburon dive numbers set by MBARI. (2) Sample numbers for the push cores are generally not consecutive but reflect permanent labels on coring and other devices that are randomly chosen before each dive, and many of the push cores are reused in later dives. USGS sample protocol could not used during dives except for the Activity ID (W-1-05-SC). (3) Sample numbers recorded in FACS reflect only those samples that will be brought to the USGS for logging, description, and, in most cases, archiving.
