Field Activity S199MB

Identifier S199MB
Alternate names S-1-99-MB
Purpose Core through Holocene mud layer on shelf and recover material from beneath underlying shelf-wide unconformity believed to represent Holocene transgression event. Core and recover material filling inner-shelf paleochannels that represent buried channels cut during lower sealevel stands.
Description Chief Scientist: Steve Eittreim. Coring and Sampling and Vibracoring data (vibratingcore) of field activity S-1-99-MB in Monterey Bay, CA from 10/05/1999 to 10/08/1999
Location CA
Summary 22 Cores were recovered averaging about 2.5m in length with the longest, 5.8m in length.
Info derived Age and composition of material underlying shelf unconformity through C-14 dating or other analyses. Age and composition of material filling paleochannels.
Comments Vibracoring was carried out with the services of TEG Oceanographic Services of Santa Cruz, owner and operator of the Vibracore system. Weather conditions were mostly good. Found operations viable up to wind conditions of 15 knots. No anchoring required; manuevered, using DGPS, to stay on positions of sites selected along existing seismic lines.
