The Barrier Island Evolution Research (BIER) project has identified a research and application gap that lies between the rapid response time scale associated with individual storms (hours to days) and long-term evolution that is associated with geologic controls and climate change (decades to millennia). Our broad objective is to fill this gap by understanding how to integrate short-term storm and non-storm conditions and processes spanning oceanography, geology, geomorphology, and, where relevant, biology in order to make predictions that are valid one or more years into the future. To achieve this general objective, we expect to:1) Understand how different beaches, barrier islands, wetlands, and lagoons will respond to future storms, climate, sea level and why different geologic and geomorphic settings respond differently. 2) Quantify the different processes and interactions such that we understand what is important where, when, and why?3) Apply our understanding and capabilities to solve coastal management problems. |
