Field Activity 2018-359-FA

Identifier 2018-359-FA
Purpose Site visit to coral calcification monitoring stations to measure coral and algal calcification rates.
Location Biscayne National Park, Fowey Rocks Light (Homestead, FL) FKNMS, Crocker Reef (Islamorada, FL) FKNMS, Sombrero Reef (Marathon, FL) Dry Tortugas National Park (Key West, FL)
Summary Used scuba to collect Acropora palmata and Acropora cervicornis colonies from blocks. Measured buoyant weight and took photographs of each colony. Then returned corals to blocks. Collected nylon tiles off blocks to bring back to lab to weigh and photograph crustose coralline algal communities. Collected and replaced temperature loggers.
Info derived Mass of calcium carbonate gained per unit time for corals Acropora palmata and Acropora cervicornis and crustose coralline algal communities on nylon tiles. Hourly temperature data for past 6 months.
